Yes and no... With the Wii you can do basic exercises a bit like following an instructional DVD... or you can add the balance board and do much more... The Nintendo Wii Fit section will tell you more Helly x Celebrating 10yrs of National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society Doing a Tandem Skydive - May 2011 - All Sponsorship Welcome - www.justgiving.com/helencopeland Read my blog - Helly Copeland

There are lots of exercise dvds on the web and NRAS have a leaflet about this. I go swimming and the place is always very warm and there is a beach I can go down to get into the water. The water is always warm as they have lots of toddler classes going on.
I would love to have a Wii, but feel I can't justify the expense right now. I do exercises given me by the physio, but obviously they aren't very energetic, just ones to loosen my pelvic girdle.

Hi Barbara, We have just bought a wii fit for christmas, looking forward to having a go!!! not sure how it goes exactly, I think there is someone showing you the moves and you copy them. I am interested in the balance ones, as my balance is awful, not sure what that relates to, and rheumy no use!! The tai chi sounds really good, does anyone know where you can buy the dvd? Did ienjoy the hydro sessions, but you only get 6, and although it would be good to continue there isnt a pool around with the hydro facility. I cant swim and wont get into a normal sized pool. Am hoping that the wii will be the answer for now. Take care, and merry christmas and a happy new year to everyone love Barb x . BARBARA

My physio told me to roll onto my operated hip and onto my stomach to strengthen my back. Couldn't have done it without a hip, but I'm finding now I've got a new hip its not that difficult. She then said to arch your back and tighten your glutes! I do this when I get in bed at night. Carol

Hi Barbara & Tigg,
Thank you, will look into the Wii thing and will be seeing a physiotherapist in January and will see what they have to say about it. Me wants to go in the hydro pool...

Hi Carol
I always used to sleep on my front but haven't managed to turn over since I had both hips replaced. Do you reckon it would be safe to attempt with two replacements, or should I check with my physio first do you think?

The Tai Chi for Arthritis Numbers 1 and 2 DVDs are by Doctor Paul Lam ( a sufferer himself). They are easy to follow. I think I got mine from Amazon and Ebay. I havent yet set up a DVD player in the lounge (first thing after Christmas) so mine havent been used for some time. I used a local pool (warm) and then the hot tub for 20 minutes.
Hope this helps Sue

In hospital they always ask you to roll ONTO your operated hip, to change sheets etc. They put 3 sheets on when you're going down to theatre, including a thick canvas to transfer you from bed to table - quite an art one nurse doing this with patient in bed! Not sure what you do when its both hips Jean, but I suppose they mean its safer to roll onto your most recently operated hip? After about 6 weeks post op physios told me its ok to roll onto a new hip. The worst you can do is roll the opposite way, without pillow support. I'm 11 weeks post op and will be seeing surgeon next Wed. to go back on waiting list for left hip. I shall ask him if I can use my exercise bike again - usually its ok after 12 weeks, although mine's a revision so takes a bit longer. That should tone up my legs and give me a CV workout. We've got a Wii fit but I don't think my quads are strong enough for that and with one leg longer than the other, I don't think my balance would be very good! Carol

Hi Bouncing tiger good thread thankyou I dont have wii fit or monye as yet for one but while away i did manage to go swimming twice had far less porblems doing so than 1 year and half ago.Managed few lengths just had to change strokes was using for instance less back stroke due to shoulder movement. i feel tired afterwards but no where near same as before. so i intend this along with my regular walking to be my exercise for now, been told try do 1 weight bearing exericse so thats walking and 1 non weight bearing re swimming. as a balance. obviously i am going to discuss with my Gp first before upping my exercise they already know im doing more walking and that was fine. so u go for it hun no harm trying if feel pain stop, adapt or seek advice first may be wise. lv inky07 cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun

What are you adding to your tea Jean? I don't know about knees. Are you allowed to kneel down or put weight on them after replacement?? My physio said even just rolling onto your front and lying there, doing nothing else helps strengthen your back, but if you add in back arching and glute tightening, even better. Just getting into that position will use other muscles and do you good. Check with your physio or Dr. These steroids I'm on are really good, hope it doesn't go downhill when I wean off. I'm tempted to get on my bike and watch the snow! Carol

It's a secret little something Stewart sent me, Carol!!!
I tried the rolling last night and just wish you could have seen me. I got stuck half way and Steve had to sort of shove me over - we won't even go into the getting back again. However, I did some back arches and shall continue to do this - whether I get stuck or not!! Thanks for the advice.
As for knees - Mr Turner said "just get on with life" - it's almost impossible to dislocate knee replacements. I am allowed to kneel but being so overweight it would probably take a crane to get me up again!! Love Jeanxx

Your brain will get used to the movements and after a while it will be second nature. Don't forget to add in your glutes! Carol

Pleased to hear that Jean! Even the rolling over will work muscles you might not otherwise use. I got on my exercise bike today. Ok, its a little early (4 days) and it was a bit awkward getting my leg over. I only managed 3 minutes and felt out of breath. Just shows how unfit I am. I'll aim to increase by a minute a day. Carol

Hi Tig
After talking about it for about a year Jeff and I have just bought ourselves a Wii. I did wonder if I'd get on with it, as I have quite a bit of pains in my arms, and even moving them hurts, but we've got the sports one and I'm loving the bowling (I used to enjoy it 'live' before the RA). Okay, it hurts a bit, but they do say 'no pain, no gain' so I'm putting up with it for the sheer enjoyment. Plus, of course, I hope it's doing me good!

Oh I love the bowling one! I used to love going bowling but my wrists didn't and I didn't fancy using that ramp thingy The golf is fun and if you find standing in one position too hard it'll still work sitting down with the chair to the side (so you're still in a 'putting' position)...... boxing definitely works the biceps! The tennis I find tricky and don't really get on with it.
